Selenium is essential for the functioning of glutathione peroxidase (GSH peroxidase), one of the body's main antioxidants. Selenium has a close relationship with vitamin E. Vitamin E performs similar functions to GSH peroxidase, including protecting cell membranes by detoxifying peroxides and other free radicals. GSH peroxidase may also regenerate oxidized vitamin E in microsomal membranes.

Selenium is a powerfull substance and has many applications. As an antioxidant, selenium provides protection from alcohol induced oxidative stress, thus helping to prevent alcohol-induced liver injury, and reduces oxidative stress that leads to DNA damage. Selenium has also been shown to reduce the damage inflicted on the hypocampus by the excitotoxin quinolinic acid.
