Salvia root (Salvia miltiorrhiza), commonly known as Dan Shen, has been an important herb in China, Japan and Korea for centuries. Salvia root has been traditionally valued for a wide variety of conditions, but the most common use has been to support a healthy heart and circulation.
Saliva Supports a Healthy Cardiovascular System
Salvia contains a range of compounds, soluble in either fat or water. Magnesium salvianolate B (MSV-60), recently isolated from salvia by medical researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, was determined to have powerful antioxidant actions in vitro. Salvianolic acid, a metabolite of MSV-60, was shown to be the strongest of salvia's constituents in protecting heart mitochondria from free radical damage.
